Hidden plumbing leaks rarely start as dramatic floods. More often, they show up as a higher water bill, a soft spot in the floor, a stain that keeps spreading, or the sound of water moving when every fixture is off. By the time water is visible, it may have already traveled through flooring, framing, insulation, or concrete.

R.S. Andrews provides leak detection services for homeowners who suspect a plumbing leak but do not know where it is coming from. Our job is to narrow down the source before unnecessary demolition or repair work begins.

Finding the Leak Before the Damage Spreads

Water does not always appear near the source of the leak. A pipe behind an upstairs wall can leave a stain on a ceiling below. A slab leak can show up as warm flooring, damp carpet, or unexplained meter movement. A leaking supply line may only appear when pressure changes or when a fixture is used.

That is why leak detection starts with evidence, not guesswork. Our plumbers look at where the symptoms appear, when they happen, which fixtures are nearby, and whether the plumbing system is losing pressure or moving water when it should be still.

Signs That Point to a Hidden Plumbing Leak

A single symptom may not confirm a leak, but patterns matter. Homeowners often call for leak detection after noticing:

  • A water bill that rises without a clear change in usage

  • Damp flooring, baseboards, drywall, or cabinet interiors

  • Warm spots on floors, especially near bathrooms or kitchens

  • Water stains that return after being dried or painted

  • Musty odors near walls, closets, or plumbing fixtures

  • Low water pressure affecting part of the home

  • The sound of running or dripping water when fixtures are off

  • A water meter that continues moving when no water is being used

These clues help determine whether the issue may involve a fixture connection, supply line, drain line, water heater connection, underground pipe, or slab-area piping.

What Our Leak Detection Visit Looks Like

A leak detection visit is designed to answer one main question: where is the water coming from?

Our plumber begins by checking visible plumbing, fixture areas, water-using appliances, shutoff valves, and accessible piping. We may also review the water meter, pressure behavior, moisture patterns, and the areas where damage or dampness has appeared.

Depending on the situation, we may use tools such as:

  • Acoustic listening equipment to help detect water movement

  • Moisture meters to compare affected and unaffected materials

  • Thermal imaging to identify temperature differences caused by moisture or hot water leaks

  • Pressure testing to check whether a water line is holding properly

  • Fixture isolation to narrow down which branch of the system may be involved

The goal is to reduce uncertainty before any repair decision is made.

Not Every Leak Looks the Same

Different leaks leave different clues.

A leak on a pressurized water line may cause meter movement, pressure loss, or water sounds when fixtures are off. A drain leak may only appear after a sink, tub, shower, or appliance is used. A water heater connection leak may show moisture near the unit, corrosion, or recurring dampness around the pan or nearby floor. A slab-area leak may show up as warm flooring, unexplained water use, or moisture with no visible pipe nearby.

Because these problems behave differently, the same repair approach does not fit every leak. Detection helps separate a fixture issue from a pipe issue, and a visible leak from a hidden one.

What Happens After the Leak Is Located

Once we identify the likely source, we explain what we found in plain language. You should understand whether the leak appears to involve a fixture, pipe, valve, appliance connection, water line, drain line, or slab-area section before approving next steps.

If repair work is needed, we route the issue to the right service. That may include plumbing repair for damaged piping or fixture connections, water line service for supply-side problems, sewer line service when drainage piping is involved, or water heater service when the leak is tied to the unit or its connections.

If water is actively spreading or damaging the home, emergency plumbing service may be the right next step.

Why Prompt Leak Detection Matters

Waiting usually makes hidden leaks more expensive. Moisture can move into drywall, flooring, cabinets, framing, insulation, and subfloor materials before the source is obvious. Small leaks can also encourage mold growth, attract pests, damage finishes, and increase monthly water costs.

Early leak detection helps limit unnecessary damage and gives you a clearer repair path. It also helps avoid cutting into walls, floors, or ceilings simply to search.
