Living in the Lowcountry means dealing with hot summers, mild winters, and intense humidity throughout the year. A heat pump is one of the most efficient ways to keep your home comfortable in every season. Instead of generating heat like a gas furnace, a heat pump simply moves heat from one place to another. During hot summer months, it acts like a traditional air conditioner by pulling heat and moisture out of your home. When cooler weather arrives, the system reverses direction, pulling ambient warmth from the outside air to keep your living space cozy.

At R.S. Andrews, we provide complete heat pump solutions designed specifically for our coastal climate, helping you save energy, control indoor moisture, and enjoy reliable comfort all year long.

Comprehensive Heat Pump Services

Because heat pumps run during both summer and winter, they work twice as hard as systems that only heat or only cool. That extra workload means your system needs knowledgeable care to stay reliable and efficient.

Whether you have a standard ducted setup in a single-family home or manage a multi-zone commercial system, R.S. Andrews provides complete care for every stage of your system’s life. Our complete lineup of services includes:

  • Professional sizing and custom system installation.

  • Fast, accurate diagnostics and component repairs.

  • Full system replacements and energy-efficient retrofits.

  • Preventative seasonal tune-ups built for coastal conditions.

  • Full integration with your existing ventilation and air conditioning systems.

Heat Pump Installation

Getting the most out of a new system starts with proper sizing and design. A system that is too large will turn on and off too quickly, leaving your home humid and clammy. A system that is too small will run constantly without ever reaching your target temperature.

During a heat pump installation, our technicians calculate your home’s exact cooling and heating needs by evaluating window placement, insulation, home layout, and your existing ductwork. This ensures your new unit delivers balanced airflow and proper humidity removal.

We install modern, high-efficiency systems equipped with variable-speed technology that automatically adjusts to keep your temperature steady. We offer standard central systems, flexible ductless mini-splits for targeted comfort, and dual-fuel hybrid setups paired with a backup furnace for extra peace of mind.

Heat Pump Repair

When your heat pump stops working right, getting it fixed quickly prevents minor issues from turning into major breakdowns. Because these systems run all year, parts like reversing valves, fan motors, and electrical switches naturally wear down over time.

Our experienced technicians perform targeted heat pump repair services using modern diagnostic tools to find the root cause of the problem. Common issues we solve include:

  • Stuck Reversing Valves: If your system blows cold air in the winter or warm air in the summer, the reversing valve that switches modes may need repair or replacement.

  • Defrost Cycle Problems: Frost naturally builds up on outdoor coils during cold weather. If the defrost sensor or control board fails, ice will lock up the outdoor unit and block airflow.

  • Refrigerant Leaks: Low refrigerant levels drop system performance and cause indoor coils to freeze over. We locate the leak, repair the tubing, and restore the correct charge.

  • Electrical and Motor Failures: Worn contactors, weak capacitors, and failing fan motors can cause your system to trip breakers or shut down completely.

If your system breaks down during extreme heat or a sudden cold snap, our emergency HVAC team responds quickly to get your home comfortable again.

Heat Pump Replacement

Heat pumps operating in coastal environments typically last between 10 and 15 years. Over time, constant exposure to salt air and high humidity causes wear that degrades efficiency and leads to frequent repairs.

Replacing your aging system is usually the smartest choice if:

  • The cost of a major repair is more than half the value of a new system.

  • Your system uses older, phased-out refrigerants that are expensive to refill.

  • Your monthly electric bills keep rising even though your habits haven’t changed.

  • Your current unit struggles to keep your home’s humidity at a comfortable level.

Upgrading to a modern replacement unit lowers your energy bills, runs far more quietly, and keeps indoor air comfortably dry.

Heat Pump Maintenance

Routine heat pump maintenance is essential in our coastal climate. Salt spray, pollen, and lingering humidity can quickly build up on internal components, causing rust and dropping efficiency. We recommend scheduling a tune-up twice a year—once in spring and once in autumn—to keep your system running smoothly.

During a preventative tune-up, our technicians complete a thorough checklist:

  • Coil Cleaning: We perform a detailed chemical wash on indoor and outdoor coils to remove dirt, salt, and bio-film, restoring heat transfer and preventing coil leaks.

  • Refrigerant Checks: We measure system pressure and refrigerant levels to ensure your system isn’t under stress and is running efficiently.

  • Drain Line Flushing: We clear out condensate drain lines and treat drain pans to prevent algae clogs, water backups, and home water damage.

  • Electrical Safety Inspection: We tighten electrical connections, check capacitor strength, and inspect contactors to prevent unexpected electrical failures.

  • Airflow & Filter Checks: We check air pressure and inspect blowers to ensure clean airflow throughout your home, protecting your overall indoor air quality.

Heat Pumps for Cooling Homes and Businesses

While heat pumps keep you warm during mild winter days, their main job in Bluffton, Hilton Head, and Savannah is summer cooling and dehumidification. Coastal air holds a tremendous amount of water vapor, which can make your home feel sticky even when the air conditioner is running.

Modern residential and commercial heat pumps feature variable-speed compressors that run at lower speeds for longer periods. This steady operation pulls significantly more moisture out of the air than older single-stage systems, keeping indoor humidity below 50% without making your home feel too cold.

For commercial HVAC setups, variable-refrigerant systems allow you to cool certain offices or zones while heating others at the same time, keeping employees and customers comfortable throughout the facility.

Our Heat Pump Service Process

We follow a thorough, standardized process on every service call to ensure accurate work, complete transparency, and lasting system reliability:

  1. Comprehensive Diagnostic Inspection: When our technician arrives, they perform a complete physical and electrical check of your equipment. We measure electrical draw, evaluate refrigerant pressures, test airflow static pressure, and inspect internal components to identify the exact root cause of any issue rather than just treating the surface symptoms.

  2. Clear Explanation & Fixed Upfront Pricing: Before any work begins, we walk you through our findings in plain language. We outline all available repair, maintenance, or replacement options and provide straightforward, fixed-upfront pricing so you know the exact cost before work starts.

  3. Precision Service Execution: Once you approve the work, our NATE-certified technicians perform the required repairs or installation. Every job follows strict industry guidelines, manufacturer specifications, EPA refrigerant safety standards, and local building codes.

  4. Complete System Commissioning: After completing the repair or installation, we run the system through a full operational cycle. We verify temperature differentials (Delta T), test defrost cycle controls, check condensate drainage flow, and confirm thermostat communication.

  5. Final Walkthrough & Customer Orientation: We finish every service call by reviewing the completed work with you. We explain how to operate your controls efficiently, review maintenance requirements, and answer any questions to ensure complete satisfaction.

I had the system checkup today by Clarence. He was great! He explained everything took his time and recapped anything he found that could potentially be a problem. I felt very confident he knew what he was doing. He did not try to sell me anything as my system is 8 years old and I had another company about a year ago tell me I should be looking to replace it soon. I highly recommend RS Andrew’s and if I do need a new system they will be who I call but in the mean time I will be doing all my maintenance and repair business with them.
